Frere Hospital identified underutilised space in the existing main building. The space was to be utilized for a child friendly operating theatre suite, which provided paediatric surgical services to the Frere Hospital theatre complex as a whole.

The theatre suite was designed with the induction room close to the entrance, it is open and under close supervision of the nurses’ station, with a medicine room. The recovery area provides adequate space and is opposite the theatres for emergencies.

Staff facilities for both medical and nursing staff were created for a pleasant work environment and management supervision is central to the unit. The operating theatres floor area has been increased to allow for state-of-theart technology.
