The new Cecilia Makiwane Hospital provides level 1 and 2 healthcare services, focused on providing the people of Mdantsane with a state of the art, modern health care facility which is functional in its response to the needs of the community, and also an aesthetic contribution to its surroundings.

The new hospital complex consists of a 500-bed hospital facility (280 level one beds, 162 level two beds and 58 step down beds), a 100-bed psychiatric hospital, staff accommodation and nursing college (1500 students) with student accommodation.

The design of the new hospital challenges the previous traditional paradigm, with emphasis on shorter walking distances and improved observation.
