The design of mental health facilities has evolved over many years, each project building on the successes and failures of previous efforts as architects tried to refine their solutions for a highly challenging patient population.

It was therefore accepted that the nature of the project of this kind could experience some form of evolution during its creation.

The design of the Kimberley Mental Health Facility challenged the designers’ ability to create a facility, which incorporates state of the art management features in order to reduce the risks associated with the patients and their condition, whilst maintaining a residential ambience that does not attract to the many vandal-proof safety features.
