The new oncology department building with supporting services, transit ward and out-patient functionalities will operate as a sustainable and complete oncology department in Mthatha, within in the OR Tambo District of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The project responds to various requirements of health care service delivery as set out in the briefing document. In addition to considerations of public facilities within communities, the design proposition also responds sensitively towards the locale as it is on the site of the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital located in the city of Mthatha. The primary objective of the design is to provide a state-of-the-art oncology facility with high operational functionality within a patient-friendly environment.
